^ Spring tasks
2019 official first day of spring is March 20. Spring time goals for yard safety and cleanliness include south side and north side work. A third weather sensitive goal set involves moving some perennial plants while the weather is yet cool enough to do so.
^ south side cleaning and mulching
First spring time goal is to clear the area between firepit and cherry trees south side of back yard, and mulch here with wood chips. At this time we do a "rirst pass" leveling which means smoothing out a few places of the ground between cherries and concrete wall, but not a complete leveling. That work requires a much greater removal of excess soil.
The need met by reaching this goal is a safe space, at least up to its edges namely where the south walking ramp is under construction. Also combined goal with safety is to clear and open the space so there is a visual impact and reference to much of the area we want to level further in a "second pass" with machinery. That's a much larger removal of soil. The clear and safe space after completing first pass work will also allow for safer access to ladder work and pruning in the cherry trees.
As a step and aid to clearing this space we'll select as many potted plants to give away as appear in good enough condition to do so. Two plants which will stay in the area for the spring time are: bergenia from the first house (growing in the ground now) and the original long step yellow rose also from the first house.
- [ ] "first pass" leveling and mulching of firepit and cherry trees area
- [ ] creation of place for gathering madronas and other potted trees in one or two places, wood chips mounding for temperature moderation
^ north side lavendulas
A second goal of late winter / early spring time is to clean up along north fence area, planting four or five French lavendar at the foot of the fence and completing the mulching there. Also to consider whether to plant a palm tree at one point where presently the downspouts from the backyard roof drain near the property line . . .
Some "backlog" tasks include:
- [ ] preparing planting hole for second planned palm tree, front of chimney front yard
- [½] move of Marionberry from Matt, presently rooted next to firepit in three or four places
- [ ] move of second Marionberry from foot of front retaining wall, (need to determine best permanent place)
- [ ] move of dicentra formosa volunteer seedlings from front bed and agave mound to backyard, spots TBD . . .
^ cool weather transplants
Working to move everything from [ ] to [½] to [✔] . . .
- [ ] move of Carolina raspberries near recycling bins to backyard area
- [ ] move of thornless blackberry to backyard area, spot to be determined . . .
- [✔] transplant the two lower perennial lupines, one of them f2 generation from "Jurassic garden" at 111th and Halsey (1)
- [ ] pot up two-year treelings white oak and peach presently under Japanese maple front yard
- [ ] !!! lift and pot or move dicentra formosa volunteers from agave mound
- [ ] !!! lift and pot spirea douglasi from foot of deck and next to strange lilac
Later determinations to be made by mid-April are to locate, mark and measure square meters of terraced planting space middle of back yard, for iris seedlings and vegetables.
Notes:
(1) large lupines to go above new terraces next to white fir tree.
^ cool weather repotting

^ Sidelined plant descriptions
Following plant descriptions are for plants either sold out or temporarily not available in the size and form described:
- Agapanthus, also called "Lily of the Nile", pot of about eight seedlings. Being seedlings we cannot say what color or tint the flowers will have, but a couple siblings of these shows light, light blue flowers. Lily of the Nile generally give blue flowers. There is also a white flowering cultivar in commerce, and some dark blue and dark purple variants of this tough, South African origin plant.
Trouble getting this one into the database 2018-12-03 . . . ah, must have some fields filled in on 'data' tab, and maybe 'links' tab in product editing pages! - TMH
- Echinopsis oxygona, a barrel type cactus with very stubby short thorns. We've only grown this plant for a couple of years, and only small ones, but we have observed the beautiful and fragrant pink flowers a couple of times now on this safer less thorny cactus family member. In Pacific Northwest this plant will pretty much always be a container plant. One-year to two-year plants for sale for five dollars each, three year E. oxygona selling for eight dollars each. More info coming soon . . .
Active not side-lined . . .
Strawberries potted:
-
Strawberry plants potted and for sale. Some in one-gallon pots, some in smaller starter pots. For sale by Milwaukie gardener selling these for one dollar ($1) each. We normally sell these for a little more but we're putting on a sale for the time being.
Organically grown and cared for, no sprays or chemicals used.
These strawberries are established in their pots, and won't miss a beat being planted in the ground anytime now. Our Willamette Valley weather is mild most of the year. Well rooted perennials in pots we can plant just about anytime the ground is not frozen.
Agave bracteosa:
-
Two year agave bracteosa plant for sale, Milwaukie gardener selling for eight dollars ($8).
Thornless hardy agave, can be planted in ground or grown as container specimen. An unusual agave that is underutilized in gardens in general. People-friendly and pet-friendly, soft leaves. Moderate growth rate, over a few years in well-drained garden spot will reach up to about 24 inches diameter, little bigger maybe, and about 15 inches tall.
Grows best with some protection from overhead winter and early spring time rains.
Mostly a foliage plant. Monocarpic (blooms once) but grows side plants, sometimes called "pups" in the intervening years up to flowering.
Lily of the Nile smaller form:
-
Lily of the Nile plants, in two-gallon and three-gallon pots. For sale by Milwaukie gardener. Mature plants which are blooming size. This type of Lily of the Nile has light blue flowers in July and early August, atop eighteen-inch to twenty four-inch stems.
One of the smaller and cold hardier forms of Lily of the Nile (agapanthus). May die back to ground in harder Pacific Northwest frost event, but easy to mulch before such times to protect the current leaves on the plant.
